So I decided to go back and begin at the beginning of Sloane’s miniscule oeuvre. If NYRB publishes it there must be something to it, some value for serious readers such as myself. This made me reconsider my first impression and doubt that I had read it closely or attentively enough.
Until I saw that NYRB was issuing both together in one volume. I guess I can’t remember, but I do remember that it didn’t make much of an impression, so I shelved both and forgot about them. Or maybe I read it first because its pages weren’t as old and yellow and brittle. I had copies of both of his novels, but I read the second one first because I liked its title better than the first’s, To Walk the Night. Years ago I read William Sloane’s second (and last) novel, The Edge of Running Water.
